Three Key Words for Moms

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Lately as I’ve had the chance to meet moms and hear their questions, I have realized there are three words that I have used over and over again in our conversations that bear discussing in a little more detail. I think when moms understand these three words, they have a much clearer picture of what their life and priorities are to look like. The three words are: calling, seasons, and balance. Let’s take the word “calling” first. As I’ve mentioned here on this blog in the past, I believe the calling of the Christian mom is no different from the calling of every Christ follower: to love God and to live out the mission he has given us all (to be his witness to the…

The Real Purpose of Motherhood

Friday, March 11, 2011

When I found out I was pregnant with my first son, I thought the right thing to do in preparation for his arrival was to pare down my life and shift my focus entirely to motherhood. Scot McKnight: Pastors can start asking women to give testimonies as to how they are serving. Many women are already missionally involved in other people’s lives. It takes a far-sighted or insightful pastor who says from pulpit and in different ways of teaching, “Here is a concrete example of how a mom is living in a missional way,” or to give…

Why Mothers Judge One Another

Monday, November 1, 2010

Last week, I had the good fortune to spend time with my friend Jennifer Jao, whose story appears in The Missional Mom. She is a physician and a research fellow at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, and she was back in Chicagoland with her two girls while her husband Greg attended the Lausanne Congress gathering in Capetown, South Africa. We met at a nearby “Little Monkey Bizness,” a paradise for children with all manner of amusements such as a huge bouncy house and other indoor play equipment. At first, we were the only ones there, so our kids had the run of the place, and they were having a great time. While they played, we chatted about motherhood and about how…
